Abstract Background Xylaria is a little known genus in the state of Michoacán, in such a way that only five species had been cited. Objective Contribute to the knowledge of the diversity and distribution of the Xylaria genus for the state of Michoacán. Methods Collections were carried out randomly at the Biological Station Vasco de Quiroga, collections came primarily from cloud forest and oak-pine forest. The identification was made under the traditional techniques in Mycology that include macro and microscopic study. Results and conclusions Sixteen species of the genus Xylaria are described, of which 12 are new records: Xylaria arbuscula, X. berteroi, X. corniculata, X. cubensis (and its anamorph phase Xylocoremiun flabelliforme), X. aff. gracillima, X. grammica, X. juruensis, X. liquidambaris, X. mellisii var. nuda, X. scruposa, X. subcoccophora and Xylaria sp.. All are distributed in the cloud forest except for two species found in the pine-oak forest.

Resumen Antecedentes Xylaria es un género poco estudiado en el estado de Michoacán, de tal manera que a la fecha sólo se habían citado cinco especies del género para esta entidad. Objetivos Contribuir al conocimiento de la diversidad y distribución del género Xylaria para el Estado de Michoacán. Métodos Se realizaron colecciones de manera aleatoria en la Estación Biológica Vasco de Quiroga, las recolectas provienen principalmente de bosque mesófilo de montaña y bosque de pino-encino. La identificación se realizó bajo las técnicas tradicionales en Micología que incluyen estudio macro y microscópico. Resultados y conclusiones Se identificaron 16 especies de las cuales 12 son nuevos registros para Michoacán a saber: Xylaria arbuscula, X. berteroi, X. corniculata, X. cubensis (y su anamorfo Xylocoremiun flabeliforme), X. aff. gracillima, X. grammica, X. juruensis, X. liquidambaris, X. mellisii, X. scruposa, X. subcoccophora y Xylaria sp. La mayoría de las especies se encontraron habitando el bosque mesófilo de montaña, a excepcion de Xylaria cubensis y X. juruensis que también se encontraron en bosque de Pino-Encino.

This paper describes the Mexican health system. In part one, the health conditions of the Mexican population are discussed, with emphasis in those emerging diseases that are now the main causes of death, both in men and women: diabetes, ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular diseases and cancer. Part two is devoted to the description of the basic structure of the system: its main institutions, the population coverage, the health benefits of those affiliated to the different heath institutions, its financial sources, the levels of financial protection in health, the availability of physical, material and human resources for health, and the stewardship functions displayed by the Ministry of Health and other actors. This part also discusses the role of citizens in the monitorization and evaluation of the health system, as well as the levels of satisfaction with the rendered health services. In part three the most recent innovations and its impact on the performance of the health system are discussed. Salient among them are the System of Social Protection in Health and the Popular Health Insurance. The paper concludes with a brief analysis of the short- and middle-term challenges faced by the Mexican health system.

En este trabajo se describe el sistema mexicano de salud. En la primera parte se discuten las condiciones de salud de la población mexicana, con énfasis en los padecimientos emergentes que constituyen las principales causas de muerte: diabetes, enfermedades isquémicas del corazón, padecimientos cerebrovasculares y cáncer. En la segunda parte se describe la estructura básica del sistema: las instituciones que lo conforman, la población a la que cubre, los beneficios que reciben los afiliados de las distintas instituciones, las fuentes de financiamiento del sistema, los niveles de protección financiera alcanzados, los recursos físicos, materiales y humanos con los que cuenta y las principales tareas de rectoría que desarrollan la Secretaría de Salud y otros actores. También se describen los mecanismos de participación de los ciudadanos en la vigilancia y evaluación del desempeño del sistema y su nivel de satisfacción con los servicios recibidos. La tercera parte se dedica a discutir las innovaciones más recientes y su impacto en la operación del sistema. Destaca la discusión del recién creado Sistema de Protección Social en Salud y su brazo operativo, el Seguro Popular de Salud. El trabajo concluye con un análisis de los principales retos que enfrenta en el corto y mediano plazo el sistema mexicano de salud.

Foi feito um estudo sorológico em quatro zonas geográficas do estado de Chiapas México. Foram colhidas 1333 amostras dos habitantes das 13 comunidades situadas na costa, na região central montanhosa, na floresta lacandona e na região chamada mesochiapas. Cento cinqüenta e uma pessoas (11,3%) foram identificadas como soropositivas. A infecção pelo Trypanosoma cruzi teve a influência da geografia local. Na floresta lacandona nas montanhas centrais, foi encontrada uma prevalência de 32,1 e 13,8% respectivamente, mais que na costa 1,2%. Na zona de mesochiapas não foi encontrada nenhuma pessoa com sorologia positiva entre 137 estudadas. Como encontramos sorologia positiva em crianças menores de 10 anos, pensamos que exista uma transmissão ativa contínua. Na costa foi reconhecido o vetor Triatoma dimidiata e na floresta Lacandona o Rhodnius prolixus.

A serologic survey was carried out in four different geographic zones of Chiapas, Mexico. A total of 1,333 samples were collected from residents of thirteen communities located on the Coast, Central Mountain, Lacandon Forest and a zone called Mesochiapas. One hundred and fifty one seropositive individuals (11.3%) were identified. Human Trypanosoma cruzi infection was influenced by geography. In the Lacandon Forest and Central Mountains there was a higher seroprevalence 32.1 and 13.8% respectively, than on the coast (1.2%). In Mesochiapas there were no seropositive individuals among the 137 persons tested. An active transmission is probably continuing because seropositive cases (13.8%) were detected in children under 10 years of age. The vector recognized on the Coast was Triatoma dimidiata while in the Lacandon Forest it was Rhodnius prolixus.

Correlations of measures of percentages of white coat color, five measures of production and two measures of reproduction were obtained from 4293 first lactation Holsteins from eight Florida dairy farms. Percentages of white coat color were analyzed as recorded and transformed by an extension of Box-Cox procedures. Statistical analyses were by derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood (DFREML) with an animal model. Phenotypic and genetic correlations of white percentage (not transformed) were with milk yield, 0.047 and 0.097; fat yield, 0.002 and 0.004; fat percentage, -0.047 and -0.090; protein yield, 0.024 and 0.048; protein percentage, -0.070 and -0.116; days open, -0.012 and -0.065; and calving interval, -0.007 and -0.029. Changes in magnitude of correlations were very small for all variables except days open. Genetic and phenotypic correlations of transformed values with days open were -0.027 and -0.140. Modest positive correlated responses would be expected for white coat color percentage following direct selection for milk, fat, and protein yields, but selection for fat and protein percentages, days open, or calving interval would lead to small decreases.
